What does success mean? Is it one of those subjective concepts like what tastes good or what’s fashionable? Or is there some definitive measure? What comes into your mind when you hear the word “successful”? Is it that wealthy or beautiful person on the magazine cover? Is it that lady in the Mercedes or that guy in the Bentley? Is it the single mother who’s able to provide for her family? Is it you? How do you know for sure?

In a word, EVERYTHING!!!! If you don’t think love is pretty crucial to any meaningful emotional relationship, then I need to hear from you, because I’m certain to learn something! Don’t get me wrong, there’s all kinds of other stuff that’s important too: trust, kindness, respect, forgiveness, etc. But let’s not lose sight of the big picture, loving relationships need love. So if we can all agree to that, then why do so many relationships (of all kinds) seem to be in such turmoil??

Have you ever worked really hard to achieve a goal and then actually pulled it off?! It’s a great feeling . . . a sigh of relief, a weight off your shoulders . . . a feeling of accomplishment. So now what? Do you stand on that accomplishment for a while, chest poked out with pride or do you treat it as a step towards whatever is next? Maybe a little of both? Maybe something else altogether? It’s a tough call for sure.

Have you ever looked back at your reaction to something with a feeling of amazement? Was that really me? Did I really say that? Was I on autopilot or something? You know, you feel like you were just kinda watching as something else made your body and mind act out some weak, poorly written drama. How did that happen? Why did that happen?

Picture this scene . . . You’re at a table in a crowded coffee shop with your laptop and an over-priced drink. You’re watching some ridiculous vids on YouTube, updating your Facebook status and sketching out your latest blog post, while remembering that you actually came here to work! You briefly look up and notice that all the tables are full. Everyone else is just as engrossed in their computer related activity as you just were. And then you think to yourself, why am I here? Didn’t I decide to leave the house and work in a public place, so I could be amongst people?

Have you ever had someone end a relationship with that cliché “It’s not you it’s me”? What a line huh? You’re like come on already, just be real with me! Have the courage to level with me, instead of feeding me this drivel.

With a title like this, the following article could be about almost anything these days. Hype is like a dietary staple in this country. It's everywhere . . . TV commercials, movies, music, sports, politics, magazines, the news, . . . *cough* Wall Street, banks *cough*. . . everywhere. You could write entire books (and I'm sure many have) about the millions who are carried downstream towards the rapids, by the currents of hype. There's no shortage of hype men selling their wares or hype machines socializing the masses. The question is, do you believe the hype? Before you answer, let's make sure we're talking about the same thing here.

Do you think you're a good listener? Come on, keep it real! Be really honest with yourself. Now that you have an answer in your head, consider this: how might the people you spend the most time with answer that question about you? You know, your co-workers, your friends, your family, your significant other, your children . . . how would they answer? Would their answer be drastically different from yours? I've always thought of myself as a good listener, but recently decided to reexamine the question for myself.

As someone who's owned a web design company for over 10 years, I'm pretty picky about the technologies I use, especially my web browser. Think about it . . . a stock broker doesn't look at just any ole stock ticker, anymore than a master craftsman would use any ole set of tools. Professionals require tools that suit their needs and perform to their expectations. When you use those tools in your personal life too, the ante gets raised even higher!

In today's society there are far too many examples of emotions gone wild. No, I'm not talking about some video of buxom coeds you can buy off late night TV. I mean, true real life emotions gone terribly wrong: People yelling at each other in traffic, reality TV, shoppers trampling each other so little Jimmy can get that new toy on the cheap, domestic violence, leaders waging wars . . . I could go on and on here. So with all of that emotional fuel out there, how many of you endeavor to control your emotions? Seems like the right thing to do, doesn't it? Here's my take on it.
